So the other day i broke down ...... again 😂 luckily 100 yards from my driveway! Whilst driving home i started to get a vague loose feeling when changing into 1st, 3rd and 5th gears yet 2nd and 4th was fine. Gradually it got worse to the point i could no longer select 1st 3rd and 5th then 2nd and 4th become vague and loose. Within 30 seconds of this i lost all gears and the gearstick was going round in a circle like a spoon in a bowl of porridge! So quick look on the rs owners club and i found a selector shaft thread about a roll pin that breaks.... same symptoms as i had.
So stripped it down ripped intercooler box and gearbox mount out and removed the plate on top of the gearbox that the gearstick cables attach too.
This has the selector levers on and in there is a roll pin that pins the shaft and the levers together. The pin is a steel coiled spring pin, this has broken into 3 pieces as it did in the thread on the rs owners club. This allows the shaft to turn seperate from the levers and then not select gears.
So i knocked the old pin out and replaced with a slotted steel spring pin rather than a coiled as i couldnt get hold of a coiled 1. To strengthen it a little i then inserted a second slotted pin into the 1st. I did see something about someone who had replaced it with a nut and bolt but to me this is a real bad idea! If that bolt breaks or the nut falls off then both parts will fall out and could get chewed up in the gears destroying the gearbox! If the slotted or coiled spring pin breaks it will be retained in the shaft still due to the pin being compressed. Cut a long story short i banged it all back together and jobs a good un
I do have pictures of this but cannot post them using my phone, clayton if youre reading this can i send you the pics to add to the thread?
Thought i would post on here to help the forum members as not many seem to be over on the other forum now. This will probably become more of a common problem as these cars get older, oh and just to add the other thread said the dealers can no longer supply this pin so i didnt even bother trying.
