  • Gearbox issue fixed

So the other day i broke down ...... again 😂 luckily 100 yards from my driveway! Whilst driving home i started to get a vague loose feeling when changing into 1st, 3rd and 5th gears yet 2nd and 4th was fine. Gradually it got worse to the point i could no longer select 1st 3rd and 5th then 2nd and 4th become vague and loose. Within 30 seconds of this i lost all gears and the gearstick was going round in a circle like a spoon in a bowl of porridge! So quick look on the rs owners club and i found a selector shaft thread about a roll pin that breaks.... same symptoms as i had.
So stripped it down ripped intercooler box and gearbox mount out and removed the plate on top of the gearbox that the gearstick cables attach too.
This has the selector levers on and in there is a roll pin that pins the shaft and the levers together. The pin is a steel coiled spring pin, this has broken into 3 pieces as it did in the thread on the rs owners club. This allows the shaft to turn seperate from the levers and then not select gears.
So i knocked the old pin out and replaced with a slotted steel spring pin rather than a coiled as i couldnt get hold of a coiled 1. To strengthen it a little i then inserted a second slotted pin into the 1st. I did see something about someone who had replaced it with a nut and bolt but to me this is a real bad idea! If that bolt breaks or the nut falls off then both parts will fall out and could get chewed up in the gears destroying the gearbox! If the slotted or coiled spring pin breaks it will be retained in the shaft still due to the pin being compressed. Cut a long story short i banged it all back together and jobs a good un
I do have pictures of this but cannot post them using my phone, clayton if youre reading this can i send you the pics to add to the thread?
Thought i would post on here to help the forum members as not many seem to be over on the other forum now. This will probably become more of a common problem as these cars get older, oh and just to add the other thread said the dealers can no longer supply this pin so i didnt even bother trying.

Well known problem this is, already had this in the 90's on my mk5 RS2k
but good of you to point it here
as said, good idea to not use a bolt. and although ford don't supply the rollpin anymore, any good engineering company should be able to supply such pin

Sorry, only just seen this thread Robbie. Great advice and will certainly help many owners having the same trouble.

Hope you still have the pictures and if so can you email them to me at - clay@focusrsbuildlist.co.uk

Awesome info dude thanks for posting! Intrigued to see the photos of your mod as Im sure this is something that alot of us will face at some point, maybe if this happens fairly often someone could come up with a repair/upgrade kit so soon as the issue arises boom forum has a solution

Hi, my car is a bit clunky going into first and second. A friend of mine read about a pin that could possibly be the cause. Would this be the one?

It was me that used a nut and bolt, and she is still going strong all these years later.

I've drawn an arrow to the pin that snaps in the picture,

This is the selector mechanism that sits on top of the gearbox, and under the gearbox mount.

Just get a jack under the box and remove intercooler/ battery tray to access the mount and you can see the selector mech, then remove the gear selector cables by pushing the button on the back on them and you can now lift the mechanism free after you have undone the bolts holding it in place, it also has some gasket sealer compound like hylomar to stop it leaking. so may take a pull or a lever to get it free. before starting ensure the gearstick is in neutral. Clean off old sealant and apply new stuff to reassemble.

Does anyone know the length of the pin?

while im doing other preventative maintenance I figured id look into getting a spare roll pin, since they seem to be small and cheap enough to keep on hand just in case.

Hi! I have been exactly the same.... Im happy to know that i have not been the only one, because the fault seems much worse than it´s. Moreover, it has happened to me testing the Sabre Stage 4 And i have been wanting to try it well, I haven`t traveled 15 miles!
When i got the gear selector, has been disassembled! So the pics come me great. Thank you very much!

This happened to my car i posted the thread originally on the rsoc... i bought a pin from a hardware store with the same OD but a thicker gauge steel. Cost less than a quid!

I was giving mine death at the time and missed a gear in the process of trying to force it into gear i sheared the pin in three!

Just managed to find this thread, and I am hoping this is the issue I am having. Can anybody help me with the size of this pin? Might as well order one in case it is it.

Welcome back to frs ownership. Possibly sold to me on the sly or maybe it happened on the drive home. Either way car won't engage into reverse and the other gears are feeling quite sloppy. I was struggling getting it into gears from about half way home, so had a bad feeling. Thought I would get it out the garage for a wash earlier and it wouldn't reverse, so pushed it out and whilst reaching in to pull the handbrake, managed to pull some tendons in my arm. So won't be anymore tinkering for a while.

A member of the RSOC years ago ordered 36mm but mentioned being a little long and said they poked out about 3mm either side.

Another owner mentioned the pin being 32mm but not sure this is correct?

I have done a search on the same make and managed to find some 30mm pins which are the same strength but should fit better.

If you want them to finish at 32mm would mean buying the 36mm and grinding them down to length.
