  • Alternator Fire

    Hi guys,

Well I had a bit of a panic moment yesterday as I pulled the car out of the garage to give it a final wash before winter storage. When I started the car I heard a loud whining noise which was then followed by a lot of smoke. I quickly knocked off the car and opened the bonnet to find smoke billowing out from the alternator. I'm hoping I caught it before causing any damage to anything else .

I am now on the look out for a new alternator. Has anyone got a recommendation for a new one? I have spoke to Ford but they are wanting strong money, so curious to see if there is any alternatives out there?

    Thanks in advance.

Worse case scenario i'd say your auxiliary belt could be damaged.
Personally I would remove the aux belt to check which part isn't turning anymore. 20-30 minute job.

You can also remove plugs and turn the engine by hand on crank pulley, just to check which part causes the smoke (not turning anymore).

If it's the alternator, I would have it refurbished by a specialist, saves you a lot of money.
