Good morning all,
I'd just like to introduce myself, my name is Jay and I am the new owner of Focus RS #2520. I have been after a Mk1 RS for the best part of a decade but either 'cashflow' or the length of my commute meant that it wasn't suitable. Thankfully this year I've made a few changes which mean that I finally had the money AND the car would get the use and the attention it deserves.
I picked the car up on Monday and my early impressions are pretty good, it drives significantly better than the five or six others which I looked at (three were running late 200's and one was running 314bhp. So the Boost came on like a sledgehammer, which my wife struggled with) the car feels very tight and I was drawn to this one due to it's mileage and service history.
However, there are already a few items which I need some help/advice on if that is ok.
1) The car only came with 1 of the 'GT' alarm fobs and the loop on it has split. Also the light on the fob comes on when the buttons are pressed but the car doesn't respond. My assumption is that I need to pair the fob with the car?! Also, I have had a quote on a new alarm fob (finis code:1227210) of £201.12 which seems ludicrous. Has anyone else managed to get one for less that that recently or is that the going rate?
2) The car only came with 1 of the 3-button Ford Keys. I have had a quote for a new key (finis code:1117686 now 1233541) of £147.54 and then Ford inform me there is a further charge to have it coded.
Has anyone bought a key off eBay (the ones with the genuine remote are about £40) and did they manage to get it to pair/code to the car with or without a dealer?
3) The car is on the build list as 'Modified'. However other than the Scorpion exhaust (which I will be replacing with a factory system, which is currently in my garage) I cannot identify any other modifications, is there any information on the modifications as part of the previous owners submission to the build list?
4) The Steering wheel is very tired, the blue is faded and the black section is tacky. I have found someone on eBay (in Germany) selling replica replacement wheels which look pretty nice, however it also looks like people have had wheels re-covered/re-conditioned through this site so I'd be interested in peoples experience and advice. The car will mostly be my daily so if I could have a replacement on an exchange basis, it would work best but if I have to send my exact wheel off, that is also possible.
5) The car is going to a Ford dealer tomorrow to have a full service and I was going to ask them to print off the result from the diagnostic tool. I am particularly interested in the Calibration ID of the ECU tune/calibration. Is there any information on which calibration SHOULD be in the car and what the giveaways are if it has been 'chipped'/tuned/blue-finned etc? I am keen to make it as standard as possible. I work for an automotive manufacturer doing Engine Calibration on petrol engines, so I know the level of effort which goes into a Factory engine tune/calibration. Not that I am in any way belittling aftermarket tuning, there are lots of people who do a brilliant job of improving performance and torque delivery but it would be a touch hypocritical of me to run an aftermarket tune on my car.
Thanks heaps in advance, I'm very much looking forward to learning even more about the car and getting as much enjoyment as possible.
Jay
