  • What's our MK1 RS worth?

Newbie poster here, however I've done some searching around the web and you folks seem like a friendly and very knowledgeable bunch, so I thought I'd ask your advice please.

I'm building an extension on the side of the house soon, however there's a RS in the way....

My nephew bought an 03 plate around 12 years ago, but was too young to be able to afford the insurance, etc so he soon parked it on the driveway and forgot about it. After more than a decade out in the rain (shame on all of us!) it's in a fairly shabby condition.

Rear brakes calipers and discs are rusted together, likewise front discs. The Brembo calipers up front will surely need a rebuild. The paint is ok, seats good apart from some wear on driver's bolster and the interior seems dry. Wheels are fine. No idea on the engine, the bonnet hasn't been opened forever. It ran well in 2012.

But obviously it's underneath (which I haven't checked) that will need the most work: suspension, rubbers, brake lines, rad, (potentially) the floors, etc are probably all shot!

So the car will need to be dragged/towed out of the way, but it can't stay on the property any longer. I'm a classic 4x4 fan and don't know much about hot hatches, but even I can see this is a special car and should be saved by someone. We'd hate to just scrap it.

I've read some threads here and now know about the 3 x RS specialists you guys recommend, however I think restoration could be expensive....upwards of £10k (which I'm spending & more on the house instead). Autotrader shows cars of good condition asking around £15k, so there could be a profit in it eventually. Although I've seen enough Car SOS episodes to know we could also have a rusty money pit.....

So if we chose to sell it as is, does anyone know what someone might pay for it today?

Welcome to the forum. Sad to hear the car has been left laid up for so long but appreciate life gets in the way sometimes.
Do you know what number the car is by any chance? There will be a plaque opposite the start button next to the gearstick.
Its a strange old market lately so possibly quite difficult to value without taking a look around to see whether its just a basic mechanical refresh required or something more involved (welding/paintwork etc).
I've seen a few cars being broken for parts being bought at 6/7k so maybe somewhere around that figure depending on how much work is required.
This is only my opinion of course and a rough guess based on your information.
Appreciate as a new member you cannot post pictures just yet but it would be helpful to see some good quality ones to help with a value.
Hope the car goes to an enthusiast that will save it.

Thanks for the kind welcome, DanT. I'll check the car's plaque number tonight & report back. Also take some pics in the murky English light tomorrow morning for the future.

I too hope we can find someone keen to save the car. 6/7k would be great, but a bit less than that would be very nice too.

Welcome to the forum Jay and a detailed explanation of your car you are looking to sell.

As Dan has said it's a shame it has been stood so long but there are a lot out there that sadly can't be garaged and left outside unused. I know of a 1,400 miler that was garaged from new then lost the storage and is stood outside and now going very rusty, a case of some owners keeping them for sentimental reasons but being stood outside deteriorating is a shame as it seriously does a lot of damage over the years. We all like to hear of what we call 'Barn Finds' though. These cars still find owners interested in a project but if too far gone the car would be purchased as a breaker to save others for engine components, gearbox, running gear and interiors etc.

Would be good to know the build number to see if I know much about the previous history of the car? Also to know the current mileage of the car although the battery will be flat to check. We could check the last MOT with the registration to get a rough idea?

Look forward to hearing more about this car Jay.

Look forward to seeing some more details/photos, may be worth speaking to Clayton with regards to the images, im sure he would be interested in putting some photos with the details of the car for the sake of the build list details etc even if they arent uploaded to this thread.
As i say thats a loose estimate based on a few things but it can easily go a bit either way dependant on a few things.
